Bateria do Rio de Janeiro
The bateria is the drum ensemble of an escola de samba (Samba school)
that is made up of up to 300 percussionists. The bateria accompanies the enredo which is the song composed and selected by each samba school every year for their carnaval parade. (1) With the creation of the Samba schools such as Deixa Falar, Estação Primeira de Mangueira and Conjunto Oswaldo Cruz (now Portela) in the 1920’s, the baterias began. (2)
